Miss Malawi supports population slow-down

Recently crowned Miss Malawi, Cecelia Khofi, is living up to her billing. Under just two months to her title, she has already met the UNFPA Malawi officials several times, and plans to present a talk on population before parliamentarians come 28th June 2017.

Organised by the pageant sponsors, Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) and The Nation Publications Limited (NPL), Khofi will engage the parliamentarians on population impacts on the youth. Malawi is a youthful nation with about 52% of the population under the age of 18, as highlighted by the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development.

Meeting UNFPA officials, the reigning beauty queen also highlighted why interventions around population are key to addressing the youth development agenda. With Malawi’s youth bulge and a ‘demographic dividend’ that can be nurtured to opportunities around employment and entrepreneurship, and therefore development for the country, her engagement in the population discourse is a strategic focus.

The theme for the 2016 beauty pageant was ‘Managing Population Growth’, which attracted various stakeholders including Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM) that financially supported the pageant with three Million Kwacha.

Making the ‘symbolic cheque donation’, the FPAM executive director said that the donation was in line with what the association believes.

“We pride ourselves in being the leading youth friendly organization in the country. This year’s theme revolves around addressing over-population and we offer services that concern many issues including effects of over population. Our dream is to make the Miss Malawi an ambassador and an agent for change.”

“Population is an issue of national importance that needs support through creative initiatives,” he said.
